South Canterbury woke up to a decent amount of snow on Friday 19th June...
which resulted in power loss in parts of the region. In some places power lines snapped and poles broke due to the heaviness of the snow.
Most effected were the areas from Cave to Fairlie; North-East of Geraldine including Woodbury and Peel Forest; and the High Country with Tekapo and Mt Cook. Generators were run to provide power to parts of the Fairlie township and to keep the connection to the Comms Sites.
Over 50 NETcon staff including line mechanics, cable jointers, construction operators and electrical fitters were working extended hours during the 6 day network emergency status. The repair of the snow damage and restoration of electricity had main priority for the time of outages. Cold temperatures below -10°C and limited daylight hours complicated the working condition for field staff. Crews managed to get power restored to most customers by Tuesday night.
