NETcon Ltd was involved in the recent Alpine Energy Ltd project to upgrade the Bell’s Pond Substation.
to provide a 33 kV feed to the Cooney’s Road Substation located at the Oceania Dairy Ltd factory.
NETcon Ltd carried out the build, and commissioned the new switch yard prior to the start of the irrigation season October 2013. The project started during the civil construction phase with the installation of an extended earth mat in early August and finished with the commissioning of the new switchyard extension at the end of September.
Transformer T2 at Bell’s Pond Substation is a 110/33/11 kV 20 MVA transformer with a 33 kV winding which was unused. The upgrade consisted of providing the necessary circuit breaker, voltage transformers, current transformers, disconnectors, and termination gantries to enable the transformer to be connected to the new line feeding the Cooney’s Road site.
The new line is a double circuit 110 kV line, initially run at 33 kV. One circuit is terminated on a gantry inside the Bell’s Pond substation and is connected through one circuit breaker to the 33 kV winding on the transformer. The second circuit is terminated on a pole outside in the street. Both circuits are bonded together outside the substation. This work was carried out by NETcon Lines Division in parallel with the Sub Station Build being completed mid September.
The disconnectors, circuit breaker, current transformers and termination gantries are all rated at 110 kV in anticipation for a later upgrade to 110 kV. The voltage transformers and surge arresters are rated at 33 kV.
The newly commissioned yard won’t be utilised until the Cooney’s Rd Sub Station is built early 2014.
